Hey everyone. I work for Purina and we've just release details about a new, first of it's kind Pet Discovery & Community Centre that will be launching this summer at Harbourfront in downtown Toronto.

For the centre, the Purina PetCare Legacy will be holding a Career Fair titled "The Job Your Pet Wants You To Have." Since everyone in this group loves pets I thought you would want to know!

Career Fair for New Pet Community & Discovery Centre

In preparation for the summer launch of a first-of-its-kind Pet Community & Discovery Centre, the Purina PetCare Legacy will be holding a Career Fair called “The Job Your Pet Wants You to Have”.

The Pet Community & Discovery Centre will offer the kind of environment where dog and cat lovers have always wanted to work – a place where people can celebrate their love of our four-legged friends. It is a pet-friendly and pet-accessible, 16,000 square foot centre focused on encouraging responsible pet ownership.

We are looking for people with event, pet, and/or retail experience. The following positions are available:

~ Full-time Operations Manager

~ Full-time Exhibit & Event Supervisor

~ Part-time Pet Education Specialists

~ Part-time Exhibit & Event Staff

~ Part-time Gift Shop Staff

“The Job Your Pet Wants You to Have” Career Fair will take place in the Brigantine Room in the York Quay Building at the Harbourfront Centre on Thursday, April 24, 2008 from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Monday, April 28, 2008 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. If you are unable to attend in person, apply by forwarding a cover letter and resume to pawsway@purina.nestle.com.

Picture Guidlines

Hi puppy&dog Members,

First off THANK YOU for all your great pictures in the first ever Canada's Next Top Dog Contest.

We loved your pictures, but sadly due to the requirements for publishing, many submissions could not be used because of the resolution size Also, because our magazine cover is vertical, some great images that had horizontal orientation couldn’t be used. Some key points to remember are:

1. Pictures need to have a high resolution. That would mean 300 dpi or the highest setting on your camera. Resolution, just in case you’re unfamiliar, is how many dots are in a square inch—the fewer the dots, the poorer the quality when printed. What looks great on a monitor doesn’t usually reproduce in print. It would look like your pet was in a fog.

2. Keep in mind the magazine is vertical. When taking pictures of your pets to send to us please hold the camera vertically instead of horizontally. Some photos will be used in the articles themselves so not all have to be vertical but they are preferred.

3. We need pictures of pets doing everything pets do.
 
We need dogs…

. playing with children and other dogs, dogs with cats,
. dogs recuperating from a medical treatment (bandages, cones, etc),
. playing in snow, growling, sleeping, eating, being trained, working, swimming, being silly,
. wearing leashes, harnesses, in car restraints, in muzzles,
. on furniture, in their bed, in their crate, in kennels,
. who are small, large, old and young.

We want to see your dog being a dog!

We've added some new articles to the website and will continue to do so over the new few weeks. Also we have some great news for all you cat owners!

Cat BASICS will be launching in Fall of 2007. In the meantime we would love if you could use the Canada's Next Top Dog contest page to enter pictures of your cats for us to use in the first issue when you send us picture of your dogs! They won't count towards the contest obviously but we'd apprecaite the help and your cat could be in our first Issue!

Please read the other post in Miscellaneous that provides info about the types of pictures we need of your dogs and cats.

The Right Breed

After the release of the film 101 Dalmatians, dog breeders experienced a mad rush – everyone seemed to want one of these handsome, spotted dogs.

Sadly, the Dalmatian became one of the most common breeds to be surrendered to animal shelters within two years.

As many people quickly found, the Dalmatian is not the calm, elegant dog character in the movie. Many impulsive Dalmatian owners found their dog did not seem to fit into a lifestyle involving a chaotic household filled with young, active children.

This phenomenon has been repeated many times. There was a rush to own Parson Jack Russell terriers because of the dog, Eddie, on the popular television series, Frasier. After the Beethoven movies, everyone wanted a Saint Bernard.

Choosing a dog breed in this manner is a recipe for disaster, and for many dogs, it ends with a trip to the animal shelter.
