After puppy is familiar with home area it is time for short car rides other than to the Veterinarians for vaccinations that can leave a not so nice smarting pinch.

Always have your puppy on a collar and leash when taking him about introducing him to unfamiliar people and places.

Walk puppy around in the neighbor hood if he balks at the storm sewer grate for an example do not pick him up and say, "ah poor baby". Reasure him there is nothing to be fearful of by encouraging him to go near or around or over it. As puppy sniffs the scary grate encourage forward movement by a gently tug on leash, bend to touch the grate to prove it is not harmful. Praise him as he moves closer.

Go to different parks for walks and play. Sit and people watch. Your puppy will hear unfamiliar sounds and see other pets. You may meet other pet owners and your pup will too. Pup learns this is a safe and fun place.

Pop in to your Veterinarian's with your pup just to say "hi". Explain to the staff what you are doing. They will respect your action in socializing your pup proving that going to the Veterinarian's is not always a bad place. Often the staff will fuss and give treats to your puppy.

Puppies do not need puppy socialization cl***es they received all their canine socialization with their litter mates in the first eight weeks. Puppies need worldly experience within your household and community in order to become a well rounded companion dog. Constant interaction with people and other animals in a safe environment make up good experiences imprinted on your puppy's character which will transform into a well balanced dog in the future.

Socialization Basics...

Interested in knowing how to tackle socialization basics with your puppy?

Read "Bite-Proof Your Puppy"

http://www.puppyanddogbasics.com/pds1.asp
